Introduction

An Internment Camp is a large facility which holds people from political opponents, members of specific ethnic or religious groups, enemy aliens, people with mental illness, civilian inhabitants of a war-zone mainly during a war.

In WWI, places such as Germany, United States, Austria-Hungary, Canada, and Australia had camps holding civilians as prisoners of war.

Life in internment camps was bleak. People who were taken to internment camps had a limited food supply and were treated unpleasantly.

Internment or custody of a person in time of war was common everywhere. In Canada, such people were denied many legal rights. Civilian internees had generally been treated according to the international Prisoner of War standards.
